Dividing by a Two-Digit Number

Vaughn has 1290 picture files that he wants to put evenly on 15 CDs. How many files need to go on each CD?

Divide 1290 by 15 to find how many files go on each CD.

Step 1: Divide each place value, beginning on the left. Look at the first digit. Can you take any groups of 15 from 1? No. Can you take any groups of 15 from 12? No. Can you take any groups of 15 from 129? Yes!

Find the largest number of times you can take 15 from 129. Try numbers that you think are close, then check using multiplication.

Try 7. 15 × 7 = 105

Try 8. 15 × 8 = 120

Try 9. 15 × 9 = 135

You can take 8 groups of 15 from 129. Write an 8 in the answer above the 9.
